Do-It-Yourself Divorce in BC

Many people entering a divorce consider doing it themselves in order to save money.

A recent post on Do-it-Yourself Divorce by a UK divorce lawyer raises issues that anyone considering this route ought to consider carefully.  One of the cons the article mentions is:

If you take no legal advice at all, gaping financial pitfalls can result. You are entitled to agree to demands that place you at a financial disadvantage – but you may come to regret these down the line. Or you may agree to demands only to discover, sometime later, that you were “bilked” of your rights and entitlements.

DIY Divorce is also available in British Columbia and you can obtain information and the forms at http://www.familylaw.lss.bc.ca/guides/divorce/ or from the Attorney General’s website at http://www.ag.gov.bc.ca/courts/family/index.htm.

For some people a DIY divorce may be simple to do, however, in my experience, often there are many issues to consider of which you many not be aware.

When you do need help or advice, don’t hesitate to consult a family lawyer. Even a short meeting will be well worth it.
